To become a firefighter in the state of Maryland
You must be a U.S. Citizen
You must be over 18 years of age
You must live within a reasonable distance of the fire station
You must pass a physical exam
You must have a driver’s license and a social security card
You must have a clean background
Becoming A firefighter in Maryland is easier than most states.
A lot of cities require just the above with sometimes just a mininium amount of course work. Check with your local fire department in case they require any firefighting certification.
Expect to work 24 hour shifts
You will visit local business to do fire inspections to meet community members and let them know if they have any fire risk. A keen eye for detail and knowledge of local firefighting codes is essential.
The number of female firefighters is on the rise. Most departments across the United States now see women making up 10% of the firefighting force!
Understand though your own family comes first in life, a life as a firefighter will be odd shifts with odd hours. At a moment’s notice you may be required to drop what you are doing and leave to the fire station.
Responsibilities can include not only basic upkeep around the fire station but also grocery shopping and cooking for the fire crew.
In the 1980’s and the 1990’s a large city could put up a notice for a firefighting job and thousands would apply. Now with the requirements of college courses in most states the number of applicants has dropped down to approximately 35 per job opening.
Your first year and the station will include many challenges. You will be the new guy or girl and will have to learn the ropes. Some Fire Departments will assign you a mentor or an overseer to check with you daily and weekly to monitor your progress.
Understand that just because you are hired that your firefighting career is not guaranteed. Most stations will have you on a probationary period for the first year. If you’re used to slacking off, calling in sick and other poor work habits, choose another job besides being a firefighter.
